Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman, was the third child of the family. As a child, Ruth Roman's carnival-barker father died, which forced her mother, Mary Pauline (Gold), to become an attendant or cleaner in order for them to remain alive. Ruth went to school and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts in the tenement district. She quit school in just two years, to go into acting. Her path was not without obstacles. While in New York, her first job involved posing stills for crime magazines, the theatre work that she longed to do was abyssal. After a brief period as a hat-wearing club girl after which she decided to come back home and quit her job. In the New England Repertory Company was the first job she had as an actor who was steady. The company paid her doing shifts during the day, working as an Usherette. She took classes in drama in the Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
